I wrote this title down a couple of months ago and held it in my draft list as I waited for the narrative behind it to gently unfold, from my heart to the tips of my fingers. Sometimes, when it comes to writing, if the words haven’t flowed in the mind properly, it becomes harder to put them down into something worth reading, so all I have to do is just wait until that happens. At times, even getting that inspiration may not happen instantly as expected, it may even take days, weeks or even months like in this case. It was until today when I decided, how about I just put my thoughts down on this. I can’t be holding this topic hostage in my drafts any longer. In my world, these are the joys and woes of doing multiple things at the same time where you can be thrown off the grid abit due to time limitations. And this mostly happens when you are trying to be consistent at something, then things come and knock you off the radder making you unable to maintain that discipline of consistency you created for yourself.
Anyway, it’s almost the end of the year, and everyone seems to be tired and drained and I am not excluded from this either. The energy that I had at the beginning of the year, is not the same as what I have now because I am just exhausted. Looking back, there were months I did four or five posts in a single month and others like this month, I have struggled to finish this one. However, that said, I am trying to utilise the little energy left in me to create a narrative worth talking about, just to say we did something in October. But, come to think of it, isn’t times like these, when you are tired the most, that your purpose begins to haunt you? Like, reminding you to keep going and not to give into your body’s wishes of giving up like it expects you to because, after all, aren’t you tired?
That’s why we are here today asking, on whose ‘door’ are you knocking?
Do you ever get to ask yourself on whose ‘door’ are you knocking? Like, where do you go to seek help from? Where do you go to for refuge? If you need guidance about an issue, whom do you go to for help or, whom do you run to for solace? Those were my thoughts when I was thinking about writing this article. There was nothing in particular that I would say drew me into wanting to write anything special, but I felt like somehow this narrative just needed to get out there, either, as a food for thought, or just something for your information or maybe, something to trigger you into asking yourselves the same question. On whose “doors” am I knocking?
The ‘door’ here just means, who do we run to for help? Or who do we go to when we need advice? Or, should we need a third eye for scrutiny or a reality check, who is our go to person to give us that feedback we need?
The ‘doors’ you knock on for help, are as important as the help being sort. At times, even more important than the actual help. This is because, the person you approach or the avenue you seek to get help from, may be the sole determinant as to whether you will receive the actual help or not. These ‘doors’, could be people, or persons who hold positions, or possess certain levels of power that you need in order to gain something for yourself. Equally, these people or ‘doors’ could be holding things or opportunities or they could be owning the aid we need to get our dreams going. Sometimes, these avenues, where we go to for help, may either be the biggest help we need, or sadly, the hindrances that block us from achieving our objectives to full potential. This could be because, the people on the other side of the door, end up being those objections we don’t need, and they end up making us get it in simply because they opened the doors for us.
I have questioned myself countless times, on whose ‘doors’ am I knocking on especially when the issue that I may think is getting addressed doesn’t get addressed as fast as it should, or, if in my opinion, the help received at the end, doesn’t end up being the help I intended to get from the beginning. Then I would ask, did I knock on the wrong ‘door’? That’s what comes to mind and truthfully that could just be the answer, that I knocked at the wrong door.
So, how then do you know, on which doors not to knock on so that you don’t get disappointed, or, so that you don’t end up receiving help you shouldn’t because maybe the person who helped, wasn’t supposed to in the first place. From my conclusions, I thought it’s important to be clear about what exactly you need from the start, even before you go on tapping on to people’s ‘doors’ for help. Ask yourself, what kind of help do you need? What is your objective? Are you sincere about the help you require? Your objective and even intention ought to be specific and clear at the very least from the start. Because, when its specific and clear, then you will also be specific in the outcomes you expect. Such that in the end, if these are not being met, then you will certainly know that you are knocking at the wrong place and maybe it’s time you stopped knocking or maybe just leave even after it gets opened.
Some dreams or even ideas may fail to kick off simply because we did not knock on the right door, and sadly, it could be your fault. We can only ensure that this doesn’t happen to us if we are clear on the expectations we need at the end right from the start. If that is not clear, then we may end up receiving just any help, or even just any advise and woe unto us if we go ahead to accept those helps or worse, if we end up acting on the ill information we received causing us all manner of turmoils in our outcomes. So the reason why we need to be clear and specific is because, once we accept these ill helps or offers, they shall bind us deeply with the person giving or maybe get us committed into something we shouldn’t , even when we know for sure they won’t take us anywhere. The biggest downside of this would be, the amount of time we shall have wasted for ourselves and others as well by acting on the wrong information which could have been avoided, had we just knocked on the right ‘doors’ from the beginning.
Knocking on the wrong doors has its own adversities which would range from getting the wrong information from someone who either out of malice, chose to mislead you intentionally just because they didn’t want to see you win. Secondly, you may achieve poor results because the tools they gave you to act on were insufficient to let you achieve your intended results. Thirdly, you risk losing out on opportunities simply because the doors you knocked on denied you full access to those opportunities or, they purposefully limited the supply of information that they could have given you to execute, making you to largely lose out. Lastly, knocking on the wrong door could just subject you to high levels of mediocrity because getting poor results, or, acting on half baked information or even, being denied full information to allow you execute, will be nothing but just mediocrity.
My wishes and prayers are that, may you/we, be wise enough to knock on the right ‘doors’, always.
