Is Success Measurable? … I just thought that to myself just this morning while listening in to a vlog from a friend whose link i will share here when i get a hold of it. When they say birds of the same feathers flock together, i also find myself picking out friends who we love doing things of similar interests. Whether from the kitchen angle or inspirational angle…
…. And i just thought, we all love measuring things. Measuring knowledge, measuring love, measuring grief, measuring boundaries and success is not any different. But why though. Why do we measure it. And for those of us that do it, how exactly do we quantify success? What metrics do we have to say that i am successful this much, is it a scale that we use, is it measured by how heavy or how big it is?
Personally i have been drawn to believe that success is actually a journey and not a destination. A journey that we love and enjoy being in. I think success is a journey because what one considers as success may be obvious to another. And what was success to you yesterday may not be regarded as success today. When we perceive success as a destination, we tend to miss out on enjoying the journey that it brings. We shall always be chasing to achieve instead of enjoying your daily wins, enjoying your little pieces of happiness that the journey brings. I read a quote that says “you will pass failure on your way to success” i will choose to edit it this way.. “you will pass failure through out your success journey” because i believe that there is never a certain end to success. As all it does is just evolve.
Instead of measuring success, what we should be doing is maybe defining success. What exactly is Success to you. In your own eyes what exactly does success look like. Is it a good career, a good business, achieving good grades, being the president of a nation, being the world’s best footballer, being miss world, having the most beautiful children, having a corner office, being employee of the year, being the most wealthy person,,, is that success? maybe yes, maybe no.. But that is what i regard as destination success…
In my view what i consider as success is the habits, the little consistent actions we do deliberately towards creating what we believe to be successful. For example if waking up early every day makes your day productive, like you get the most done because you started your day early enough, that habit if done consistently and deliberately everyday will amount to greater productivity which will eventually translate to success. If reading a book every day will build your vocabulary or make you learn something new that you didn’t know which will help you use that knowledge to inspire others and make them better people then your habit of reading a book everyday eventually has translated into success. Is Success tangible or intangible? Personally I would say intangible. What we visually see as success is the result of good habits, the result of alot of effort and hard work , the reward of consistency. But the intangible works that we do to achieve that are what i perceive as actual success.
Again i will still ask, do you still think success is measurable? When we see wealthy people driving big cars, living in huge haciendas, do we think that, that is Success, i think those are just but the fruits of success and not success itself because if it were, then they would stop working as hard/smart as they are and stay back and gobble up their fruits. Success is the little things that you do everyday to make your future livable. Success is the happiness of knowing that you leave each day better than you found it. Success is smiling and knowing that someone else is inspired by the work you do, success is putting smiles on faces of people that had given up on themselves and giving them a new ray of hope that all is not lost, success is wanting to be better today than who you were yesterday, success is enjoying the ride as opposed to wondering when you will get there because what happens when you actually get there and dont like what you find, or what happens if you even don’t get there and you spent your journey not enjoying that ride..worthless right?
….To some, success can be as simple as spending time with family and friends. Being intentional to be present and be a part of your children’s lives. Being there to even teach them how to ride a bike, take them for football practice or simply train them on how to talk and treat people with respect. Having a well behaved child maybe what i may measure as success to me. Eating a fruit everyday consistently maybe what someone else’s measures as success. Taking daily walks may also be what another person measures as success. Even taking a shower everyday may be another person’s celebration of success.. Success can also be learning from your failures, making the changes and not beating yourself but picking up the lessons and growing. Success can be the effort we put in trying as opposed to giving up even before you start. Success can be as simple as asking for guidance on how you can improve your life, your business, your career and putting those lessons into practice.
Whatever is Success to you, choose to measure it with the correct metrics and dynamics of your own life’s definitions and not someone else’s because we don’t all have the same destinations but we may have the same journeys, so make yours worth the while….
*****I will give you a simple task****
1. Just take a look at at your own life today, what are some of the habits that you can pick up to do every day, intentionally and deliberately that will eventually yield the fruits of success that you can actually measure..
2. Choose to redefine success in a way that as opposed to wanting to measure it, but by building up certain consistencies that you can actually do to make the fruits of your success visible if not Measurable.
So do you still think success is Measurable? ..
